Friuli Venezia Giulia
Friuli-Venezia Giulia is a charming region with a special statute lying in the extreme north-east of Italy and renowned for its splendid beaches, its lovable pretty towns and its unique mountain resorts. In this idyllic place, crossroads of different peoples and cultures, tourists can easily go from the sea to the mountains in a really short time, crossing golden sandy beaches or barren rocky coastlines, turning into green plains and gentle hills. Apart from the sea, one of the priceless pearls of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, the region also offers innumerable sport opportunities for the whole family: skiing, biking, windsurfing, climbing, trekking, paragliding, fishing, ice-skating, are only some of the many chances proposed. Visitors are strongly advised not to miss the splendid towns of Trieste, Pordenone, Udine and Gorizia, the magnificent sea resort Lignano Sabbiadoro, and the suggestive spots Grado and Aquileia. Aquileia is an ancient Roman city founded in 181 BC and become World Heritage Site tanks to its incomparable beauties. The most important landmark of the town is the Basilica of S. Maria Assunta, a magnificent cathedral with a stupendous 4th century mosaic pavement. Outside the church there is the Cemetery of the Fallen, where, among others, ten unknown soldiers of the First World War are buried. Grado, known as the Golden Island thanks to its golden beaches, it’s one of the most attractive holiday resorts in the Adriatic Sea: crystal blue waters, marvellous sandy beaches, restoring thermae springs, delicious food, a calendar rich in events and beautiful art treasures are the main ingredients of a really unforgettable holiday. This charming location also offers the possibility to practise different sport activities: wind-surfing, tennis and golf are only a few of a long list. Lignano Sabbiadoro, “the Florida of Italy” according to Ernest Hemingway, rises half way between Trieste and Venice, near a lush pine wood, and it’s one of the most noteworthy holiday resorts in the Adriatic Sea, above all for its stunning sandy beaches and its renowned spa centres. Lignano Sabbiadoro also boasts a beautiful 18-holes golf course as well as a great variety of restaurants, discos, pubs and shops.
