Liguria
Liguria is a narrow strip of land facing the sea and surrounded by winding hills and suggestive mountains. This small but beautiful paradise is divided into two stretches by Genoa, the regional capital: the Western Riviera and the Eastern Riviera, both well-known tourist destinations. The region, birthplace of the renowned pesto sauce, also boasts a wealth of monuments and a surprisingly rich artistic and cultural life: during the summer visitors can enjoy a great number of concerts, festivals and shows under the stars. Among the spots that really deserve to be visited must be included Genoa, Imperia, La Spezia and Savona, but also the marvellous Cinque Terre (Five Lands), the picturesque Portofino and the fascinating San Remo. The charming village of Portofino was initially known as Portus Delphini (Port of Dolphins), because a great number of these lovely mammals once lived in the waters of its peaceful bay. Today this pretty spot attracts tourist from all over the world, and its port is always full of luxurious yachts and expensive boats. Among the things that really deserve to be visited are the beautiful church of St. Martin, the impressive 16th century Brown Castle and San Fruttuoso Bay with its flooded statue of Christ of the Abyss. Sanremo, probably best known as the city of flowers, is famous all around the world for its renowned Music Festival hosted in the marvellous Ariston Theatre and for its splendid Municipal Casino. Tourists are attracted to this unique town of the Ligurian Riviera for different reasons: its neat deep blue sea, its well-equipped beaches, the possibility of doing all kinds of sports, but also its luxury shops and boutiques.
