Piedmont
The name of this region means “at the base of the mountain”, in fact Piedmont is surrounded by the chain of the Alps, including the Monviso, from where the Po River rises. This region, which in February 2006 hosted the XX Winter Olympic Games, is rich in well-known mountain resorts, such as Sestriere, Sansicario or Bardonecchia: the ideal places for holidays and for winter sports’ lovers. Among the great number of lakes, the most important ones are Lake Maggiore and Lake Orta, than there are also many pleasant hillside resorts and some uncontaminated natural parks: Gran Paradiso National Park is one of the best examples. Besides Turin, regional capital and magnificent city, other important centres are Alba, world-famous for its truffles and its exquisite wines, Asti, renowned for its Palio, Aqui Terme, a noteworthy spa resort, and many others. And for the gourmets, Piedmont offers tasty traditional dishes: the Bollito Misto, a mix of pork and beef meat boiled with vegetables and served with exquisite sauces, the Fritto Misto, a variety of fried vegetables, fruits and meats, and the Bagna Cauda, a hot garlic sauce eaten with raw cabbages and peppers, all this served with Piedmontese full-bodied wines, particularly Barbaresco, Barolo and Dolcetto. The Langhe is a famous wine growing region in the south of Piedmont characterized by winding hills, fruitful vineyards and sinuous roads which offer amazing views around every corner. The great protagonist of this idyllic place is without doubt the wine: “wine trails” are organized to taste some of the best wines of the world, such as Barbaresco and Barolo, both made by the noble Nebbiolo grape. Tourists from all over the world every year in October come to Alba, the natural capital and the most important centre of the Lange, to take part in the renowned truffle festival, an appointment really not to be missed! Sestriere is an alpine village and a renowned ski resort, which together with Sauze d’Oulx, Cesana, Claviere, San Sicario and Montgenèvre constitutes the Via Lattea (Milky Way) skiing area. Hosting place of the last Winter Olympic Games, Sestriere offers 146 ski slopes, for a total of about 400 km of pistes, even with the possibility to ski at night on an illuminated run: there is plenty to satisfy also the most demanding skiers! But Sestriere is not only a sky resort: tourists can enjoy the traditional Italian dishes in one of the many restaurants of the village or spend their free time just shopping in the luxury shops of the centre; during the summer visitors can also play golf on the highest course of Europe! Gran Paradiso National Park extends between Piedmont and Aosta Valley, and it’s the oldest and most renowned national park in Italy. Immense luxuriant woods, high mountains, boundless grasslands, ancient glaciers and steep rocks are the ideal habitat for a rich and various fauna. Having a stroll around the park can be admired beautiful specimens of wild goat, the symbol of the park, marmots, recognizable for their typical whistles, weasels, ermines, hares, and also a great variety of birds and raptors, among them the majestic golden eagle. In the vast selection of local dishes, handed down from generation to generation, certainly can be found the cow’s toma cheese and the potato salami; the dessert production includes paste di meliga, excellent biscuits made of grain, torcetti, typical Piedmontese sweets, and the Nivolet chocolate cake. Saint Michael’s Abbey, considered a symbol of Piedmont and one of the most beautiful Benedictine churches in northern Italy, from the top of Mount Pirchiriano overlooks the whole valley and it’s a great example of Romanesque architecture. A peculiarity of the abbey is its 41 m-high façade, lying at a lower level than the floor of the building’s interior. Other notable attractions are the Scalone dei Morti (“Stairway of the Dead”), flanked by tombs, arches and niches, where until few years ago were visible skeletons of dead monks, the Porta dello Zodiaco (Door of the Zodiac), a treasure of the 12th century, and the ruins of the 12th-15th century monastery with the Torre della Bell’Alda (“Tower of the Beautiful Alda”), which probably in origin was a chapel reproducing the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem.
